I’m considering running a RPG to supplement the off weeks between Mr Rob’s campaign, and because I’m a sado-maschocist I’m going to modify the 4e rules to run a samurai-styled campaign world. So it sounds like its going to be a crazy freestyle adventure, if anyone wants to play. I think it could (and should) be fun, so I’m not going be stressed over this – if we get the numbers and support for this idea, I’m more than happy to uphold my end of the bargain.

I don’t know too much more than that I’m going to have to restrict the races at this stage to good/unaligned humans for simplicity. If anyone is interested, show of hands please. I have numerous ideas for classes, but if anyone has a particular type of class they’d like to play then let me know. Don’t stress if you can’t thinkof anything though, I’ve got some ideas as well. I’d suggest you play male characters as well, though I do have some ideas for female characters as well. I’ll probably create some sample ‘dm-generated’ characters to give an idea of what we’re working with.

For history buffs, the setting will likely be early sengoku period and guns will have made an early appearance. For easier reference, wiki Oda Nobunaga. At this stage, the Samurai will not have been formalised into a martial caste, though samurai as we commonly understand them will definitely exist. Swords, though carried, are probably only second favourites to spears and bows though. (Swordsmanship won’t be big yet, like it is in the late edo period).

I’ll post more later as I develop more, but if you’re interested then let me know :)

Dungeons and Dragons.  Considering the name, there are an aweful lot of dungeons without dragons these days.

The consensus seems to be Friday or Saturday Sunday night.  That means starting at 9pm QLD time for a 3 hour run.  If you have a particular preference for either night let me know.

I can’t expect everybody to know all the rules by then either, but what would really help is if you could be familiar with your own character’s powers.  The rest of the stuff I’ll try to explain as we go along.

Oh and on Monday we’ll be looking into the history of Isley, one of the new members of our band of adventurers.

Which one is he?  I’ll give you a hint… you can see his chest!

The next installment in our litte adventure is ready to go.  I put in the final touches, i.e. treasure, this morning.  There should be something in there to appeal to most characters, I think.  Anyway, this raises the question of when shall we meet again?

Various things have happened over this week that have left me without a reasonable time to play this weekend, but I’m ready to go next weekend.  My available times are:

Friday night – 9pm onwards

Saturday – 4:30pm onwards

Sunday – All friggin’ day!

Let me know when you’re free and we’ll see if we can’t organize the best time.

During the week I’ll be posting the backstories I’ve got for various characters already (vague-ish one for Geovanna, Isley of the Apricot’s one etc), and hopefully a couple on notes about the campaign world to help you succeed.

I’ve mentioned before that I have this campaign planned so far up to about level 15, and it will most likely go beyond that.  Time is going to be important in this campaign aswell, so keep that in mind whenever you pass a horse merchant.

Apart from that, I look forward to killing you playing with you soon!

EDIT:  Regarding Isley the unadaptable.  I know that specific alternating weekends are good for you, and that next weekend is not one of those.  With just a little luck we will be able to play next weekend AND the weekend after.  From then we can settle into a fortnightly system that you should be able to attend.  Either that or Tim and Pace will take turns controlling your character in a new role called ‘chief danger tester,’ testing situations for how dangerous they are.

I sincerely hope you can attend.

The software is working, the campaign is ready and we’ve got enough players now to run a game.  There has been a slight change of plans though.  There’s going to be a race against time in the games, which directly favours 4th edition over 1st.  In 1st remember you have to rest normal to recover from certain types of wounds, no ‘at-will’ powers, and you have to study for a certain number of weeks (!) before you can even go up a level.  In 4th you level as soon as you get that xp, mysteriuosly acquiring the new powers with no training whatsoever – tanks can heal themselves – magic users can cast magic missile continuously for days at a time (and beat down vault doors in a matter of minutes!) and you can have more than 1 000 000, 5-minute rests in one day.

As such I’m going to be running slightly different campaigns for 1st and 4th, but with similar themes.  The 1st edition guys get a bit more time too.

Tentative date is Saturday Afternoon!

More info for character creation and so on soon.

I’ve mentioned previously that the new 4th Edition is out.  A lot of people are having different reactions to it – unsurprisingly considering all the changes.  Rather than complain or poke fun at every little change in the system however, I’ve decided to do something different.  I’m going to run a campaign in both 1st edition and 4th edition.  1st being AD&D circa 1979.

The campaign itself is going to be essentially the same, with the same events occuring, the same antagonists and maps and so on.  There will of course be some differences.  For example monsters don’t always exist in the same manner in both / magic and magic items are very different, and there is the matter of pace.  I wont get into the details however, because that would ruin the story.

What I will do is type up a rundown of each sesson along with any player comments I can get.  At the end of each chapter of the adventure I’ll try to type up some notes too so that you can play the adventures yourself and see what you think.
